Creating Space for Difficult Discussions: Community Conversation on the Middle East

May 01, 2024 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Location Kennedy Library

Have you ever wished that you could truly understand someone’s seemingly opposite point of view during difficult conversations, but not sure about how to begin? As we work to create a gathering space for difficult discussions, join a guided conversation on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East with Eileen Babbitt, professor of the practice of international conflict management at the Fletcher School at Tufts University. Participants are encouraged to share their own experience, express concerns, pose questions, and seek a deeper understanding of other perspectives within our diverse community. Let's work together to explore how to have productive discussions across conflicts and divides.

In order to discuss sensitive topics among groups with varying points of view, we will have guidelines in place so everyone can feel this event is a space for respectful dialogue. All attendees will be asked to review and affirm their commitment to these discussion principles at the beginning of the discussion:

  1. We treat each other with respect and give each other the benefit of the doubt rather than jump to conclusions about others’ intentions.
  2. We listen with curiosity to truly understand each other, asking questions of clarification rather than making assumptions.
  3. We speak as individuals, based on our personal experience and from our own point of view rather than assuming we speak for others.
  4. We leave room for everyone to participate, not making long speeches or silencing any points of view.
  5. We agree to maintain confidentiality through non-attribution. Participants agree to make no audio or video recordings.

Limited capacity is available for this in-person only program. We encourage your participation in this community event and hope you will join us.

Please be prepared for security. To make your experience safe and enjoyable, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum takes the safety and security of all guests, staff, and visitors seriously.
