This folder contains Department of State telegrams regarding a visit by NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Secretary General Dirk Stikker to Washington, D.C. to meet with Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, Secretary of State Dean Rusk, and President John F. Kennedy. Also included in this folder are briefing memoranda concerning areas of discussion for the meetings such as the Nassau Agreement, a MLF (multi-lateral force) within NATO, the status of conventional forces build-up, a strengthening of political consultation, and NATO defense planning.

Also included in this folder is a paper by U.S. Departments of State-Defense Study Group titled, “Assessment of European Attitudes toward the Control and Use of Nuclear Force in the Defense of Europe,” discussing NATO’s role in nuclear weapons.
