Materials in this folder include newspaper articles, telegrams from Douglas Henderson, Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d'affaires for the United States Embassy in Peru, memoranda from Special Assistant to the President Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., Executive Secretary of State Lucius D. Battle, and William H. Brubeck, National Security Advisor on Africa regarding correspondence with Peruvian heads of state and the American response to the military coup during which President Manuel Prado Ugarteche was deposed. This folder also contains correspondence between President Kennedy and Peruvian Presidents Prado, Ricardo Perez Godoy, and Fernando Belaúnde Terry on subjects such as the Alliance for Progress, the spread of communist ideology, and pending sugar taxation legislation. This folder contains some Spanish-language materials.
