Kennedy’s remarks on the White House South Lawn to members of the American Legion following the presentation of the American Legion’s Distinguished Service Medal to Charles L. Bacon, National Commander of the American Legion. In his speech President Kennedy discusses the state of American military involvement in international crises, such as the division of Berlin, Germany and nations attempting to maintain or obtain independence.
