Schlesinger, Jr.; the reasoning behind the creation of the new position of Special Consultant on the Arts and the favorable public reaction to it; enlarging the definition of “The Arts,” especially regarding architecture; Arthur Goldberg; the establishment of the Freedom Medal; creating the President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts through executive order; personal impressions of JFK; setting up Heckscher’s office and staff; how Heckscher was meant to advise JFK and what his position entailed; the Cultural Center [Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts]; conversations with JFK; Mrs. Kennedy’s expansive work for the arts; the arts as part of national policy; working with other White House staff members and other Departments; designing special postage stamps; what the President’s role in the arts should be; and the Fine Arts Commission, among other issues.

This folder contains materials collected by the office of President John F. Kennedy's secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, concerning President Kennedy's remarks at a dinner in honor of all living Nobel Prize winners in the western hemisphere held at the White House. In his speech the President describes the winners from the United States as a source of national pride, but notes that knowledge should not be bound by nationality. Materials in this folder include various memoranda, drafts written by Special Assistant to the President and speechwriter Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., in addition to a banquet program, name cards, a list of attendees, newspaper clippings concerning the 1961 Nobel Prize winners, and a press release announcing the dinner. Of note are several items with handwritten notations by the President.

Kennedy’s speech titled, “The Politician and the Author: A Plea for Greater Understanding,” at the National Book Award ceremony in New York City. In his speech the Senator discusses the shared histories of politicians and literary artists, and the similarities and rivalries between the two professions. Of note are several drafts with notations by the Senator.
