Kennedy Family Collection
KFC-047-001
This photograph album was first compiled by Rosemary Kennedy as a birthday gift for her sister, Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy, in 1929, with later photographs added by Kathleen. The gold stamped title on the cover reads, “Photographs.” An original handwritten inscription on the inside front cover reads, "Kathleen, From Rose happy birthday Feb. 1929," in white ink. Original captions are written in white ink and pencil in both Rosemary’s and Kathleen’s hand. Photographs document the family life, travels, and social activities of the Kennedy family from 1927 to 1936. In addition to Rosemary (referred to as “Rose” in original captions) and Kathleen, those pictured include their parents, Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr., and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy; their siblings, Joseph P. “Joe” Kennedy, Jr., John F. "Jack" Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy, Patricia "Pat" Kennedy, Jean Kennedy, and Edward M. "Ted/Teddy" Kennedy; their aunt, Agnes Fitzgerald Gargan, and her husband Joseph Francis Gargan, Sr.; governesses to the Kennedy children, Alice Cahill and Elizabeth Dunn; nanny to the Kennedy children, Katherine “Kikoo” Conboy; family friends, Edward E. “Eddie” Moore, Kirk LeMoyne “Lem” Billings, Mary O’Keefe, Mary Veronica “Von” Rice, and Mary Frances "Sancy" Falvey; and family dogs, Buddy and Skippy. Of note are photographs of Kennedy family members and friends at the family’s residences in Bronxville in New York, Hyannis Port in Massachusetts, and Palm Beach in Florida; a visit to the Hippodrome Theatre in New York City, where the children posed with a baby elephant; Joseph, Sr., and Rose with actor Fred Thomson and screenwriter Frances Marion in California; and Kathleen and other campers and counselors at Sargent Camp in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Other locations and historic sites featured in photographs include the White House and United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C.; the National Monument to the Forefathers and Plymouth Rock in Plymouth, Massachusetts; the Potomac River; and George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate in Virginia. Original handwritten inscriptions are written in blue ink and pencil on the versos of many photographs. This photograph album contains 154 photographic prints, two photographic postcards, and one contact print of a strip of four 35mm black and white negatives.
