Materials in this folder include telegrams, memoranda, and correspondence between various members of the White House staff and individual citizens concerning incidents of religious discrimination, discriminatory housing practices, United States military personnel participating in civil rights demonstrations, the treatment of African diplomats visiting Washington, D.C., and the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a large political rally during which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech advocating harmonious racial relations. The folder also contains a report from Chief of Protocol Angier Biddle Duke on efforts to improve housing procedures for visiting African diplomats and a transcript of a meeting between President John F. Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, and business executives concerning the voluntary desegregation of commercial establishments.

This file contains copies of Senator John F. Kennedy’s speech titled, “A Time of Decision,” or, “Where Do We Go From Here?” as printed in the Congressional Record. In his speech he discusses relations between the United States and Soviet Union and proposes foreign policy measures to assist in the fight against communism, including military preparedness and disarmament; security in Berlin; policy towards Red China; and foreign aid to India and underdeveloped and emerging nations in Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.

This file contains copies and a draft of Senator John F. Kennedy’s speech titled, “America and Africa,” given at a luncheon honoring the African Diplomatic Corps in Washington, D.C. In his speech he discusses social and political revolutions occurring in Africa; a need for a multi-national program to provide aid to emerging African nations including economic, technologic, and education; and civil rights in the United States. Of note, the draft contains notations by the Senator.

This folder contains copies of speeches by Senator John F. Kennedy given before the African Diplomatic Corps in Washington, D.C. and at Saint Anselm’s College in Manchester, New Hampshire. In the speeches Senator Kennedy discusses the independence of African nations; emphasizes the need for food, education, and development capital as essential for economic success; and proposes the creation of an African Educational Development Fund and a multi-national economic development fund for Africa. Also included in this folder is a statement by the Senator on violence in South Africa.
